History and BackgroundEast Dunbartonshire Council was established in 1996 and provides the majority of local services within the community including: schools, housing, rubbish collection, recycling, environmental health, consumer advice, sports and leisure centres, libraries, parks, transport, roads and lighting, social services, planning and building services and economic developmentBordering authorities include: Glasgow City Council, North Lanarkshire Council, West Dunbartonshire Council and Stirling Council. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport are within an hour's travelling distance. Situated just North of Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire covers an area of some 20,172 hectares (77 square miles) and has easy access to major motorways. Around 110,000 people live within the area, which is bounded to the north by the Campsie Hills. Local communities include Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch, Lennoxtown, Lenzie, Milngavie, Milton of Campsie, Torrance and Twechar. East Dunbartonshire works in partnership with a variety of organisations to ensure services are co-ordinated throughout the community. The council is represented on the joint boards of: Strathclyde Police; Strathclyde Fire Brigade; Dunbartonshire Enterprise; Strathclyde Passenger Transport Association; Dunbartonshire Argyll and Bute Joint Valuation Board; Glasgow Clyde Valley Joint Structure Plan; COSLA Forums and Prison Visiting Committees. In East Dunbartonshire there are approximately 5,800 local authority houses - around 15% of the total number of households in the area. Some 30% of all households include pensioners There are 36 primary schools teaching over 10,000 pupils, 9 secondary schools attended by over 8,500 pupils and 2 special schools serving over 140 pupils. In addition the Council operates one nursery school and 16 nursery classes to cater for almost 900 pre-school pupils. The Council runs a number of sports and recreation centres in the community including: Allander Sports Complex - Bearsden; Campsie Recreation Centre; Huntershill Outdoor Centre; Merkland Outdoor Recreation Centre; Twechar Recreation Centre and The Leisuredrome - Bishopbriggs. |
