East Dunbartonshire Economy

At present, the economy of East Dunbartonshire is very stable, and has seen year-on-year increase in economic growth since 2000. It has a well educated workforce and an impressive business start-up rate. Recent developments have included the resourcing of new business premises in Milngavie, Lennoxtown and Twechar, aimed at improving skills and learning opportunities, and securing major call centre investment at Westerhill Business Park.

Future emphasis is being placed on making East Dunbartonshire an entrepreneurial community with a diverse mix of new and developing businesses, and increasing our commitment to making East Dunbartonshire a recognised learning place. Regeneration strategies are currently underway in Lennoxtown and Twechar, while Kirkintilloch's Initiative, a multi-million pound regeneration project involving a range of public sector agencies, is focusing on improving the infrastructure and amenities for local people.

The aim is to ensure that all communities in East Dunbartonshire are sustainable and self-reliant with strong town centres and village hubs, utilising the local attributes of prosperous suburbs, healthy lifestyles and high attainment levels in local schools. The process will be assisted through the development of our unique local physical assets including the Forth and Clyde Canal, the Campsies, the West Highland Way and our Roman history and heritage. We also need to ensure that East Dunbartonshire maintains an outward perspective and plays a significant role in the development of the Glasgow city-region.
